Special Viewing of Out of Place with Artist Rupy C. Tut

Join us for a special viewing of contemporary art led by dynamic Bay Area artist, Rupy C. Tut, of her upcoming exhibition, Out of Place, at ICA SF.

Out of Place, a solo exhibition of paintings by Rupy C. Tut, dives into experimenting with new surfaces, materials and scale. Through her practice, the artist preserves historic methods of making pigments and paper, creating delicate works inspired by traditional Indian painting – also known as miniature painting. Rupy includes personal meditations on the nuances of hybrid identity, belonging, and cyclical time.

Engaging with the histories embedded in her forms and materials, she weaves contemporary images and references into a centuries-old visual language, guiding viewers to see connections between past and present. Rupy's immersive environments are filed with beauty and natural wonders, drawing the viewer in. A closer examination reveals more complex narratives.

A descendant of refugees and a first generation immigrant, Rupy's experiences of movement, loss, and resilience are foundational to her creative process. She aims to create work that both respects its specific cultural lineage and embraces open, relatable themes for all audiences. Rupy C. Tut lives and works in Oakland, California. Her work has been presented through exhibitions and talks at the De Young Museum; Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; London City Hall; Stanford University; The Peel Art Galley and Museum Archives, Toronto; the Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara; and the Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco.

After examining Rupy's fascinating paintings, you may want to consider having lunch at one of the exciting restaurants in the Dogpatch area near ICA SF.
