The word maharaja, literally 'great king', conjures up a vision of splendour and magnificence. The major exhibition Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts is the first to examine the spectacular culture of India's kings within the context of the political and social changes of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through a wide variety of Indian and European objects -- ranging from fabulous jewelry and brilliant paintings to golden thrones and silver carriages -- this lecture will explore the remarkable world of the maharajas, providing an understanding of their changing status and identity, Indian court culture and royal patronage.

Anna Jackson is Keeper of the Asian Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum and lead curator of Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts. Her major research interest is the cultural relationship between Asia and the West. She is also responsible for the V&A's collection of Japanese textiles and dress.
