Prof. Blair teaches Islamic art from the seventh century to modern times. Her areas of research include the arts of Iran and Central Asia, the art and architecture produced under the Mongols, calligraphy and books.  She and her husband Jonathan Bloom are co-chairs of the Norma Jean Calderwood University Professorship in Islamic and Asian Art.  They’ve authored several books together and served as artistic consultant to the documentary Islam: Empire of Faith, shown nationally on PBS.

Prof. Bloom teaches courses on the history of Islamic art and architecture. His primary areas of research include Islamic art and architecture, the history of paper, and art in the medieval Mediterranean world.  He gave us a fascinating lecture on paper and how it travelled along the trade routes this past October for the Arts of Asia lecture series. It will be Prof. Blair's turn to speak on how the east met west under Mongol rule in the AOA lecture following this conversation.
