Karen Fraser is an expert on modern Japanese visual culture with an emphasis in late 19th to early 20th century photography and its cross-cultural interactions. Her recent studies include conceptualizations of photography as a new media in 19th century Japan.  In her latest publication, Photography and Japan (London, 2011), she depicts how the development of photography within Japan is best understood by examining its close relationship with the country’s dramatic cultural, political, and social history.  She received her Ph.D. from Stanford University where she studied traditional Japanese art and the history of photography. Dr. Fraser is a new SAA Advisor.
