The Society for Asian Art cordially invites you
to join us at an online Upper Category member event.
Come join Dr. Lutgendorf for an online window onto Bollywood! The world’s oldest commercial film industry, with the largest film production, Bollywood is characterized by a unique cinematic style, appealing to audiences worldwide. This talk will be augmented by short film clips. Dr. Lutgendorf’s extensive knowledge of, insights into and perspectives on India’s historic film industry will keep us entertained and enthralled!
Dr. Philip Lutgendorf taught Hindi language and Modern Indian Studies in the University of Iowa’s Department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures for 33 years, until his retirement in 2018. His book on the performance of the Ramayana epic, The Life of a Text (University of California Press, 1991) won the A. K. Coomaraswamy Prize of the Association for Asian Studies. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002-03 for his research on the popular Hindu “monkey-god” Hanuman, which has appeared as Hanuman’s Tale, The Messages of a Divine Monkey (Oxford University Press, 2007). His interests include epic performance traditions, folklore and popular culture, and mass media.
Dr. Lutgendorf has kindly shared with us his recipe for chai. Make the chai and enjoy drinking it while you're attending this event!
