Not Only for Children: Games in the Islamic World and India
Leisure activities fulfill more than the simple function of passing time. They respond to other aspects of human consciousness, intellect and creativity. For some, the meaning of life can be translated into the metaphor of a game board and Shakespeare's famous lines may as well be adjusted to read: All the world's a game / and all the men and women merely players: / They have their victories and their defeats, / and one man in his time makes many moves.
This talk will take a brief look at the histories and social and literary contexts from which some of the most popular games of our times, such as chess, backgammon, playing cards, and board games, have arisen and survived.
