Join us as the Asian Museum’s Tom Christensen selects stories from his book 1616: The World in Motion. The year 1616, beginning with the deaths of Shakespeare and Cervantes, was one that had a profound effect on the course of human history through the movements of individuals and globalized trade. Christensen will draw from stories of some of the remarkable individuals who highlight the interconnectivity of the 17thcentury early modern world, including the main civilizations of East Asia, South Asia, the Near East, and Western Europe and the significant colonial civilizations in Central and South America.

Thomas Christensen’s translation of Selected Poems of José Ángel Valente is forthcoming from Archipelago Press. His other books include New World /New Words: Recent Writing from the Americas, and The U.S.–Mexican War. Among his many translations are Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, Constancia by Carlos Fuentes, and Ballets without Dancers, without Music, without Anything by Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Director of Creative Services at the Asian Art Museum, he edited Bridge to Understanding: The Art and Architecture of San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum. His website is www.rightreading.com.
